U.S. Marine Corps 1942–1946

Raymond Hoyt joined the Marines in June 1942 at the age of 17. Sent to the Pacific, he served in the Solomon Islands, Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Espiritu Santo and Hawaii cleaning and repairing artillery and handling bombs. In late 1944, he was shipped back to the states for more training, and in 1945 he was in San Diego awaiting transport overseas when news of the end of the war came.
