Helen Berens and her twin sister Anna were born in southern Germany in 1934. Their mother died when they were 3, and their father went into hiding in 1939 to avoid being sent to a concentration camp. During and after the war, the girls endured years of abuse at the hands of their foster parents. Helene tells about seeing Charles DeGaulle and meeting Hitler when she and her sister were chosen to present flowers to Hitler for his birthday. First the French and then the Americans came, and the war was over. Eventually she got away from her foster parents, went to work for an American family, and met her future husband.
