U.S. Air Force 1942–1946
Philip R. Cahill joined the U.S Army Air Force Reserves in the fall of 1942 while a student at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. By April 1944 in active duty, he had graduated from bombardier school and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. Assigned to the 15th Air Force Bomb Group, 746th Squadron, in Italy, Cahill served on six or seven missions before his plane was shot down over the Sudetanland. He was a prisoner of war at Luft Stalag 3 in southern Germany until liberated in the spring of 1945 by American forces.
