U.S. Navy 1943–1946

 

Thruston Hcluding Hammer joined the U. S. Navy’s V-12 reserve program in 1943, while a student at Yale University. After training, he was commissioned as an ensign and assigned to an LST (landing transport). He served at several points in the Pacific Theater, including Okinawa, Guam, and the Philippines. In Okinawa during the height of battle from April-June 1945, the LST unloaded steel pontoons for bridges. Hammer received the WWII victory medal.
