U.S. Army 1943–1946
David Baskin entered the U.S. Army in the summer of 1943, shortly after he graduated from Stoughton High School. He joined the Corps of Engineers and was sent overseas in early 1944. As part of the 5th Amphibious Brigade he trained in getting troops on and off the boats. He landed in Normandy about 30 days after the invasion and, with his company, ferried supplies and munitions from the Liberty ships to trucks heading to the front lines. After the War he shipped home on a Navy boat, was discharged at Fort Devins in February 1946, took a train to Boston and then a bus home to Stoughton.
