U.S. Army 1943–1946

Ken Barber joined the US Army in 1943 and during World War II served in the Pacific on the USS Swanee, as part of the 692nd Amphibious Engineers. For a time his unit was in the Philippines, where he saw General Douglas McArthur, and remembered when the atomic bombs were dropped on Japan. He earned service awards for being in the Pacific Theater, along with a marksmans badge. After the war, he joined the VFW and served as past commander of the post. He and his brother Henry ran Barber Bros Florists in Natick for nearly 60 years.
