U.S. Navy 1943–1946

Charles Fraser has just turned 17 when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was trained to be an electronics technician, able to repair anything from radios to sonar and radar equipment. Fraser was assigned to the USS Redstart, AM-378, a minesweeper sent to Japan in the immediate aftermath of the war to clear away mines. The Redstart also assisted in rescuing personnel from another minesweeper, the Minivet, when it struck a mine and blew up on Dec. 29, 1945.
