Anthony J. Inferrera

U.S. Marine Corps 1943–1947

During World War II Anthony Inferrera’s mother hung a banner in her window with three blue stars on it, signifying three sons in the military. Anthony followed one brother into the Marines and his other brother was in the Army. He speaks of their reunion in Hilo, Hawaii, and how thankful they were to be alive. Sent with the 6th Marine Division on a transport ship in the Pacific, they thought they were headed to Japan, but when the atomic bomb was dropped and Japan surrendered, they were sent to Tsing Tau in China to clear out the Japanese. His unit also had to deal with Communist snipers who were trying to enter the seaport. Anthony speaks movingly about the loss of friends and how the Marine Corps affected his life.
