John A. Hill Jr.

U.S. Army 1943–1945

 

John Hill grew up in Natick and enlisted in the Army in 1943. After the first program he was trained for disbanded, he was sent for infantry training in Kentucky in mid-1944, and then sent to Europe with the Second and Third Armored Division on the north side of the Bulge, where their job was to keep the Germans pushed back over the Rhine. He talks about the casualties, the officers and the challenges of mud, deep snow and inadequate clothing.
