U.S. Army 1941–1946
Charles Rogers joined the U.S. Army in December 1941, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He trained as an artillery officer and was assigned to the 44th Infantry Division, 7th Army, in France, Germany and Austria. As a “grasshopper pilot” he flew, with an observer, a Piper Cub into enemy territory to report on troop movements, location of armaments, etc. Rogers flew about 120 missions, under near-constant enemy attack. His medals and commendations include the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters.
