U.S. Air Force 1942–1945

When World War II began, Zebulon Hites of Asheville, N.C., wanted to avoid being drafted, so he took the aviation cadet exam and entered the Army Air Corps. Hites describes in great detail how he became a navigator on a B-17, how his plane was shot over Germany and barely made it back to Belgium, as well as other moments from his 35 missions.
