U.S. Navy 1940–1945

Harold Homefield was recruited by the U.S. Navy in 1940 for his skills as a Red Cross instructor. Originally intended for the hospital corps, he instead signed up for midshipman’s school; upon graduation, he was commissioned an ensign. He was assigned to the USS Phenakite, a former yacht turned patrol vessel; by war’s end, he was the ship’s commanding officer. Homefield talks about patrolling the East Coast and the Florida Keys, as well as encounters with hurricanes, Russian officers and other vessels. After the war, he joined the Naval Reserves and began a long career as a speech pathologist.
