U.S. Air Force 1942–1946

 

Phil Cahill joined the U.S. Army Air Force Reserves in the fall of 1942 while a student at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester. He was called to active duty in the winter of 1943. He was trained as a bombardier, and would join the 15th Air Force, 456th Bomb Group, out of Italy. Shot down over Germany in late 1944, he became a prisoner of war at Luft Stalag 3 in southern Germany. He would remain a POW until liberated by American forces in the spring of 1945.
